"For a common future: Turkey, Europe and the Mediterranean"

On 4-5 November 2008, UniCredit Group and (SAM), together with the magazines East and Limes, organised the 5th Edition of the Permanent Forum on Italian-Turkish Dialogue in Rome.

In the morning, an open seminar on the issue "For a common future: Turkey, Europe and the Mediterranean" was opened by the Director of the Aspen Institute Marta Dassù and Turkish journalist Semih Idiz. This was followed by a debate moderated by Limes director Lucio Caracciolo and involved Vice President of the Italian Senate Emma Bonino, the Foreign Policy advisor to the Turkish Prime Minister Egemen Bagis, and the Undersecretary to the Turkish Foreign Ministry Zergun Koruturk. The morning saw closing remarks made by Unicredit CEO Alessandro Profumo and the Foreign Ministers of both countries, Franco Frattini and Ali Babacan.

The afternoon saw a closed doors session of the Forum. Through the contribution of experts and eminent representatives from the world of politics and civil society in both countries, the aim was to encourage strategic and constructive reflection, and civil society's contribution to bringing Turkey closer to the European Union.

The experts were asked to identify objectives, policies and measures to help overcome the diffidence that, according to the majority of public opinion in Europe and Turkey, acts as an obstacle to the harmonious development of relations between the two countries. Emma Bonino, the former Vice Chairman of the Independent Commission on Turkey led in 2004 by Martti Ahtissari, was appointed Chairman of the Working Group.
